Projects and Dinners
Our teacher Marivic came to visit us last week. Not long after we got back from NY which was pretty good, cause I was feeling pretty homesick and it aided my desire to ghettoise myself in Australian life. Cool to see someone that I actually already knew in Australia. We all talked about business for the afternoon and then went out for the biggest dinner ever. So much food it was pretty delicious. We never get dessert or wine cause we can’t afford it, but Marivic very kindly shouted us, and said she hadn’t seen anything expensive on the menu. This was because she’d just arrived and in Australian standards it was cheap. But us little students have well and truly adapted and $4 for a delicious dinner is just a bit too much for our wallets.
Anyway, we all stayed rather late and chatted for ages. It was really stimulating and it was so nice to be stimulated because I really felt like I hadn’t made my brain think about much for a long time. She is a Cuban exile who grew up in America and has lived in Australia for a very long time now. So this was very interesting basis for which to talk about culture. It added to my increasing realisation of how much culture Australia has. We joke about things to get across serious points. We are only competitive in sport. We are true supporters of the underdog. If things aren’t really important we don’t make it important. Most of this came out of a simple bon bon incident we chatted about. It made me excited or interested to go to Cuba as well.
Now I’m also feeling a tad overwhelmed by the amount of uni work I have to do in the next month. I need to get cracking on obtaining some real data.
